In general I have been disappointed about the coverage of the gay marriage issue. Too many politicians get away with statements like "traditional marriage is under attack" without having to answer critical questions about how exactly the marriage of gays and lesbians would impact "traditional" marriage and why heterosexual-parent families haven't been devastated in Massachusetts where gay marriage has been legal for ~2 years now (add some of the low countries in Europe).

So I was happy to see this coverage of a press conference in DC, where homophobic bigot Senator Wayne Allard (R-CO) held a press conference. It perfectly illustrates the duplicity and irrationality of the anti-gay position:

Likewise, Allard held a news conference Monday at which the speakers said they wanted to reduce the "epidemic level of fatherlessness in America."

"How would outlawing gay marriage encourage heterosexual fathers to stick around?" was the first question.

Allard skirted the question by saying that "laws send a message to our children."

The moderator, Matt Daniels of the Alliance for Marriage, tried to find a question on another subject. But when reporters continued to press Allard on the link between same-sex marriage and deadbeat dads, Daniels blurted out: "All right, you know what? We're going to call this press conference to a close."

I have respect for any journalists who are so persistent they cause press conferences to be shut down. We need more of this.
