Fixing FFFD boxes in Firefox

Perhaps you're experiencing strange little boxes with "FF FD" in them when using Firefox 3.0. Here's the fix that worked for me:

View >> Character Encoding >> Auto-detect >> Universal

Unfortunately, changing the encoding to Western or Universal might fix the problem, but it creates others. For example it turns ► (the ALT16) bullet character into â–º

This didn't work for me, either, but I then tried this: View->Character Encoding->Western(ISO-8859-1) which worked. I haven't restarted Firefox yet, though, so I don't know if the fix will persist.
