Now the daily national death count is rising too. A statistical blip? NYT has more here: "health experts cautioned that it was too early to predict a continuing trend from only a few days of data.... Still, many experts predicted that the declining death tolls were unlikely to last as the virus continued spreading, passing from younger people to older people and those who are more vulnerable to the most dire effects of the virus."
I read recently that Trump hasn't attended a meeting of the Coronavirus Task Force in months. It sounds like he's falling apart.
Like ok for a corresponding steepening in the daily reported cases graph about three weeks earlier.

Em - I agree. Looks to me like a real rise in deaths, not a statistical blip. Note that Israel, who did a great job of holding the virus in check, is now experiencing a new surge. This virus is a bear.
ReplyDeleteDavid - It's ridiculous to interpret Trump's absence from virus briefings as evidence that he's falling apart. He has been making lots of other public appearances. The virus briefings go better when he's not there, because the reporters focus more on the virus, rather than asking the President "gotcha" questions.
Cheers
Hi David. I didn't know that about Israel, thanks.
ReplyDeleteFauci said he hasn't talked to Trump in a couple of months. I don't know, Trump just seems very disconnected from the pandemic. Everything he says about it, as he has all along, is to minimize it. Even with school openings. It worries me that he and Pence and DeVos (sp?) are so adamant about reopening schools no matter what while saying very little about safety or procedures.
PS: Did you ever think you'd live though a global pandemic in your lifetime??? Crazy....

ReplyDeleteI think everyone who is not totally enamoured with Trump thinks that the more he keeps out of the way the better. I came across this graph of coronavirurus cases today that's annotated with his statements.

And this is him two or three months after he was first briefed on the coming crisis describing the virus that's causing the problem.
"This is a very brilliant enemy, you know. It's a brilliant enemy. They develop drugs like the antibiotics, you see? Antibiotics used to solve every problem. Now one of the biggest problems the world has is... the germ has gotten so brilliant that the antibiotic can't keep up with it!"
"And they're constantly trying to come up with a new... people go to a hospital and they catch... they go for a heart operation – that's no problem – but they end up dying from... from... problems! You know the problems I'm talking about."
"There's a whole genius to it! We're fighting... not only is it hidden but it's very smart, OK? It's invisible! And it's hidden! But it's very smart."
Yes the less he gets in involved the better. As the recent books by Mary Trump and John Bolton confirmed and pretty much everyone knew already,Trump is only concerned with what's best for him and getting reelected.
Here's the comment by Fauci:
ReplyDelete"Fauci says he hasn't briefed Trump on COVID-19 in 2 months," The Week 7/10/20

I'm sorry, there is just no excuse for that. Trump is hiding his head in the sand and not at all acting like a leader. It's pathetic and really quite sad, for the nation.
JD, wow that's some chart. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteIn Phoenix Trump made it clear he didn't even know what the "19" meant in COVID-19.
"I said, 'What's the 19?' COVID-19, some people can't explain what the 19, give me, COVID-19, I said, 'That's an odd name.'"

hmmm! we haven't lived THROUGH it yet - unfortunately
David - At regular meetings, Fauci gives his views to Pence, the Chairman of the Task Force. Pence talks to Trump. So, Trump is hears Fauci's views.
ReplyDeleteThat's probably why Fauci was excluded from the recent presser. Trump favors opening all the schools and Fauci does not.
Cheers
I think if I were president I would want to take advantage of having the country's top experts on hand and learn a bit about the virus. If only so that I didn't make a fool of myself when I was discussing what is probably the most urgent problem facing the world today. The problem is that going by various sources Trump doesn't take in what he's being told anyway. This is born out by the many misleading claims he's made about the issue.
ReplyDeleteWe're in a war. In a war the Commander in Chief doesn't exclude one of his top generals, he listens to what he has to say, each and every day.
ReplyDeleteWhy do you think Trump wants to reopen schools, regardless of whether it's safe to do so?
David Appell said... PS: Did you ever think you'd live though a global pandemic in your lifetime??? Crazy....
ReplyDeleteI always wanted to know what it was like to live during the time of the Spanish Flu, Great Depression, Civil Rights Movement, and Watergate. Just not all at once though.
