An Interview While Working From Home

Last week Gretchen Goldman, a scientist from the Union of Concerned Scientists, went on CNN to discuss NOAA's atrocious hiring of the notorious climate denier David Legates. Anyway, on left is how she appeared on camera. At right is how it looked as she was on camera, a photo taken by her husband. She swears she's wearing shorts, not underpants, as she told Slate in a (funny, insightful, parental) interview.

  2. Anthropogenic global warming is real, but is it catastrophic? That's where Legates differs from the majority.

    IMHO we just don't know.

    Cheers

    David, please define "catastrophic."

And Legates on much more than that, on much more fundamental things. Have a look at

  4. DiC, Legates has signed 'An Evangelical Declaration on Global Warming" by the Cornwall Alliance.
"We believe Earth and its ecosystems—created by God’s intelligent design and infinite power and sustained by His faithful providence —are robust, resilient, self-regulating, and self-correcting, admirably suited for human flourishing, and displaying His glory. Earth’s climate system is no exception. Recent global warming is one of many natural cycles of warming and cooling in geologic history."

  5. In 2015 he published a paper suggesting we'd see 1C rise over the 21st century. BEST shows we've already warmed 0.44C in the first 20 years. We'll blow away 1C even if there is no further acceleration.

BEST shows warming over the period:
    1990-2020: slope = 0.20539 per decade
    1980-2010: slope = 0.180754 per decade
    1970-2000: slope = 0.167951 per decade

We'll see 2.2C rise if warming becomes linear. With continued acceleration I'd bet it is closer to 2.8C.
