The Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico will be decommissioned (that is, repairs will no longer be attempted), due to overwhelming damage from, among other issues, cable problems that meant the repairs could not be done safely.
Arecibo was (at least to me :) ) one of the symbols of the postwar boom and mass utilization of science in everyday life together with general progress in almost everything possible. From the 90s the latest the USA is going down in all these. One symptom is widespread denial of science. I regularly read the idiots' forum, WUWT. I noticed that actual scientists don't comment on that. But a few years back they were there, debuking BS and trying to persuade people to come to their senses. They have given up on this. Their voice was drowned in the heap of BS.

RIP.
ReplyDeleteAn enormously, useful instrument, but all engineered structures have a finite lifespan.

ReplyDeleteOr they got banned.
Or both. If you try to comment intelligently you're set upon by ravenous dogs, and soon the moderators ban you.
