(Via Breitbart). Republicans are truly out of their freaking minds. She's calling for people to march in the streets, a First Amendment right. There is nothing in her statement that calls for violence. Nothing.
This unadulterated lying, this attempt to twist language for political purposes, this disregard for the truth, is disgusting and dark and leading to dangerous place -- more dangerous even than January 6th. And Republicans are now all in. This is shameful, as if they care anymore.
PS: The jury was (rightly) sequestered, so there was no possibility she could have influenced them.
David - I am re-posting below the comments from distinguished Harvard Law Professor Alan Dershowitz. Dershowitz knows the law; you and I do not.
ReplyDeleteYou are incorrect about the jury being sequestered. They were only sequestered when they were deliberating the verdict. They were not sequestered when Waters made those statements. IN denying the motion for a mistrial, the judge pointed out that the jury had been instructed to not watch or read the news, so they might be unaware of Waters's comments.
Dershowitz: Maxine Waters’ Tactics Similar to Those Used by Ku Klux Klan
BY ZACHARY STIEBER April 20, 2021 Updated: April 20, 2021
Rep. Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) was clearly trying to influence the jury in the Derek Chauvin trial when she traveled to Minnesota and said Chauvin should be found guilty, Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz charged on Tuesday.
“Her message was clearly intended to get to the jury—‘If you will acquit or if you find the charge less than murder, we will burn down your buildings. We will burn down your businesses. We will attack you. We will do what happened to the witness—blood on their door,’” he said during an appearance on Newsmax, referring to how the former home of defense expert Barry Brodd was recently vandalized.
“This was an attempt to intimidate the jury. It’s borrowed precisely from the Ku Klux Klan of the 1930s and 1920s when the Klan would march outside of courthouses and threatened all kinds of reprisals if the jury ever dared convict a white person or acquit a black person. And so, efforts to intimidate a jury should result in a mistrial with the judge, of course, wouldn’t grant a mistrial because then he’d be responsible for the riots that would ensue, even though it was Waters who was responsible,” Dershowitz added.
Waters told a crowd in Brooklyn Center, just outside of Minneapolis, over the weekend that they should “get more confrontational” if a guilty verdict isn’t handed down.
“We’re looking for a guilty verdict and we’re looking to see if all of the talk that took place and has been taking place after they saw what happened to George Floyd,” she also said. “If nothing does not happen [sic], then we know that we got to not only stay in the street but we have got to fight for justice.

Alan D made up filthy words and put them in Waters' mouth. That is absolutely utterly despicable.
ReplyDeleteDavid, look up the history of Dershowitz. He is despicable. He has argued in defence of torture and was involved in the Jeffrey Epstein scandal to take a couple of examples.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand... "Alan Dershowitz, the Trump-allied celebrity attorney, argued that Trump’s encouragement of (the) Capitol riots was 'constitutionally protected' speech."
ReplyDeleteP.S. Thomas - involved how? He's a lawyer so he'll have defended many unsavoury types, but that doesn't make him 'involved' in their crimes.
Layzej, you are right that defending both Epstein and Weinstein is no crime, but although Dershowitz was never convicted, the allegation are a bit more carnal.
ReplyDelete"In a December 30, 2014 Florida court filing, Virginia Giuffre alleged she was sexually trafficked by Jeffrey Epstein, who lent her to people for sex, including Dershowitz and Prince Andrew."

Thomas -- An ugly aspect of today's cancel culture is that a single unsupported accusation can wipe out a lifetime of achievements. From wikipedia:
ReplyDeleteDershowitz was named a Guggenheim Fellow in 1979, and in 1983 received the William O. Douglas First Amendment Award from the Anti-Defamation League for his work on civil rights.[151] In November 2007, he was awarded the Soviet Jewry Freedom Award by the Russian Jewish Community Foundation.[152] In December 2011, he was awarded the Menachem Begin Award of Honor by the Menachem Begin Heritage Center at an event co-sponsored by NGO Monitor.[153] He has been awarded honorary doctorates in law from Yeshiva University, the Hebrew Union College, Monmouth University, University of Haifa, Syracuse University, Fitchburg State College, Bar-Ilan University, and Brooklyn College.[4] In addition, he is a member of the International Advisory Board of NGO Monitor.[154]

DiC, Dershowitz has no doubt been an ardent supporter of Israel, which most of those awards are about, although I don't think receiving an award named after a terrorist like Begin is something to brag about. Apart from support for torture, he also suggested that Israel should ignore international laws and just blow up Palestinian villages, a rather redundant suggestion given Israel's long tradition of doing just that.
