This Year's Accumulated Cyclone Energy is Far Above "Normal"

Here's an interesting graph of this year's ACE (Accumulated Cyclone Energy) for the North Atlantic, compared to the 1981-2010 average:

Shows that 2017 Atlantic hurricanes occurred unusually late in the hurricane season. It's also interesting to look at the full ACE by year, which is available on wikipedia at The very large about of year-to-year variation makes it difficult to do statistical analyses.

Is it really that late? The N Atlantic season goes until Nov 1st.
