A letter to the editor of the
American Journal of Physics in 1989:
Mermin is both quite a character and quite a good scientist -- I used his
textbook on solid state physics, written with Ashcroft, as either an undergraduate or graduate student. (The latter, I think.) He also named the
boojum.
