OK, I stand corrected. But I've never heard anything (that I can recall) about the Musk Foundation.... As his foundation "...offers grants for renewable energy research and advocacy work," it doesn't do much for the poor of the US or the poor. Maybe very indirectly. Very, very indirectly. Nothing like Andrew Mellon, which is what this tweet was referencing, who founded a great deal of public libraries, museums, etc. He was prominent in Pittsburgh, the largest big city to where I grew up, so his name would be seen on schools and hospitals and (well) banks. He and his brother were worth over $100 B in today's dollars.

David is right. This 5.7B was likely just a tax evasion trick. Moreover, Musk, who is not known to be a humble, introvert, and self examining person, has been strangely silent on this. https://apnews.com/article/spacex-business-philanthropy-elon-musk-6cacb6f17fb88f7702b7e91006c20cc2

$5.74 billion is a pretty hefty sum, even for someone like Musk, although it doesn't seem to be exactly clear who received it.
