What someone should do (I vote for you) is to take, e.g., the IJIS sea ice (http://www.ijis.iarc.uaf.edu/seaice/extent/Sea_Ice_Extent_v2_prev_L.png) and draw a nice pic of "what rank does the current year have at each date". It wouldn't be science but it would be fun.
