Trump Hasn't Learned a Damned Thing

...or is too craven to admit he has.

Again, for the psychopath: it's always someone else's fault.

Trump called for a peaceful demonstration. He actually used the word "peaceful".

“We’re going to walk down to the Capitol, and we’re going to cheer on our brave senators and congressmen and women, and we’re probably not going to be cheering so much for some of them, because you’ll never take back our country with weakness. You have to show strength, and you have to be strong.”

“We will never give up. We will never concede. It doesn’t happen. You don’t concede when there’s theft involved. Our country has had enough. We will not take it anymore, and that is what this is all about. And to use a favorite term that all of you people really came up with, we will stop the steal....

“You will have an illegitimate president. That is what you will have, and we can’t let that happen. These are the facts that you won’t hear from the fake news media. It’s all part of the suppression effort. They don’t want to talk about it. They don’t want to talk about it....

"Now it is up to Congress to confront this egregious assault on our democracy. And after this, we’re going to walk down, and I’ll be there with you. … We are going to the Capitol, and we are going to try and give — the Democrats are hopeless, they are never voting for anything, not even one vote, but we are going to try — give our Republicans, the weak ones, because the strong ones don’t need any of our help, we’re try — going to try and give them the kind of pride and boldness that they need to take back our country.”

Giuliani: "trial by combat"

Trump didn't condemn; Nor the inflammatory words of Donny.

He spent over an hour in advance of the attack on congress lying to a group people stupid enough to believe him that the election was stolen and that they are the only ones that can put things right.

How else could this have ended? And apparently he was delighted.

DiC: Are you really still making excuses for him? As others have already pointed out this is entirely on him. Not only did he tell them over and over that the election was stolen he wound the crowd up so much about his vice president they were chanting hang Pence as they stormed the building.

What I would like to know is what you think about the attempted coup? Five dead, two bombs planted, military guys carrying zip ties, thugs with camp auchwitz and 6MWE slogans on their shirts. As well as that Republicans are admitting now that they are scared to do anything to upset Trump in case it puts themselves or their families in danger. Even McConnell is distancing himself from him. Surely it's time to admit he's not fit to be president?

Thomas said...

J.D. It turns out the photo of the 6MWE shirt was from another occasion.

J. D. said...

Thomas: Thanks for pointing that out. It turns out that was from the December Washington demo.

I think Trump's behavior over the last month has been bizarre. By trying to hold onto the Presidency via preposterous schemes he contributed to the loss of two Senate seats in Georgia. Trump has always said bizarre things and done unusual things, but the things he did and said were generally effective at achieving his desired goals.

J.D. - Many people are calling this riot an attempted coup. This is ridiculous for any number of reasons. It's a harmful exaggeration that inflames both sides.

David - the words you quoted do not call for violence nor for insurrection. In fact, I believe you could find comparably strong words from many politicians on all sides.

I think there's a double standard. I think all the rioters in the Capital should be arrested and punished. I think all the BLM and ANTIFA rioters should be arrested and punished. Which of you agree? Which of you will say that every BLM and ANTIFA rioter should be arrested and punished?

Cheers

David: Neither BLM nor Antifa tried to violently overthrow a democratically elected government.

You are way off base.

Layzej said...

I wouldn't presume that anyone here would think that rioters should not be punished. Has anyone here suggested that?

Trump said, on Jan 6th: “When you catch somebody in a fraud, you are allowed to go by very different rules."

What does this mean, David, "go by very different rules?"

Layzej said...

It doesn't really matter if Trump explicitly told them to hang Pence. He lied to them. He told them that democracy was being stolen and Pence was enabling it. He lied to them for months.

They believed him.

Back when Trump hadn't yet lost, but was already sowing this deception, you had expressed incredulity that he would keep up the charade to the point where his base became violent.

I asked "What reaction should we expect from his base if they truly believe that the election was stolen?"

Your wife's cousin Marilyn knew.

And Trump was delighted when it finally happened.

David Appell said...

Indeed. Trump had been saying for months before the election that the only way he could lose was if the election was rigged.

He told the Big Lie for essentially all of 2020. Many weak-minded people believed him. There is no denying it.

Jeffrey Scott Shapiro, a former assistant attorney general for the District of Columbia from 2007-2009, penned a piece in the Wall Street Journal in which he states that Trump’s speech doesn’t come close to rising to the level of “incitement” and that what he said is protected speech under the Constitution. He wrote:

The president didn’t mention violence on Wednesday, much less provoke or incite it. He said, “I know that everyone here will soon be marching over to the Capitol building to peacefully and patriotically make your voices heard.”

District law defines a riot as “a public disturbance . . . which by tumultuous and violent conduct or the threat thereof creates grave danger of damage or injury to property or persons.” When Mr. Trump spoke, there was no “public disturbance,” only a rally. The “disturbance” came later at the Capitol by a small minority who entered the perimeter and broke the law. They should be prosecuted.

I am struck by the failure of David A., Layzej and J.D. to apply this prosecutor's standards to rioters on the other side. Why don't the three of you straightforwardly write:
The minority of BLM and Antifa demonstrators who committed arson, looting, trespassing, and other forms of rioting broke the law. They should be prosecuted.

Cheers

David:

I know what Trump said.

I don't need "Jeffrey Scott Shapiro" to interpret it for me.

David Appell said...

David, I'm really not in the mood for pissing around with your stupid little games.

You want to play with the existence of the United States, and I do not.

BLM or Antifa did not try to violently overthrow the democratically elected government of the United States, or try to kidnap and kill members of Congress to change electoral votes and establish a coup to give the election to Donald Trump.

If you cannot see the difference then you are a bigger fascist and racist than I have thought all this time.

Prove me wrong.

Layzej said...

Right. There's really no equivalence, but obviously anyone who committed arson or looting broke the law and should face justice. DiC - why would you think otherwise?

David Appell said...

David, I just don't get it anymore.

After all this, can you really not admit this guy is a bum?

Really??

J.D. - Many people are calling this riot an attempted coup. This is ridiculous for any number of reasons. It's a harmful exaggeration that inflames both sides.

David, witnesses said there were intruders who appeared to be ex military who were searching for specific politicians with the intention of killing them. Some of those interviewed admitted their intention was to start a revolution. The Capitol is now like an army camp with troops sleeping on the floor. This was not a protest. These people were intent on preventing the peaceful transfer of power to a democratically elected administration. People telling the truth is not what is inflaning passions, its people who are lying.

David in Cal said...

Yes, Trump is a bum in a number of respects. His ego is off the chart. He's ruthless in going after his goals. He has no respect for the truth. He tells malicious lies whenever it suits his purpose.

Jeffrey Scott Shapiro, a former assistant attorney general for the District of Columbia from 2007-2009, penned a piece in the Wall Street Journal

Shapiro is an ex Breitbart contributor and friend of Steve Bannon. I will quote a Republican politician who was there,

"I have backed this President through thick and thin for four years. I campaigned for him and voted for him twice. But, this utter failure is inexcusable.

The South Carolina Republican said that any "reasonable person" could tell that that Trump's speech last Wednesday before the breach of the U.S. Capitol had "potential for violence." He also slammed the president for tweeting while the Capitol was under attack.

"I was on the floor of the House of Representatives when the rioters were beating on the door with tear gas, zip tie restraints, and pipe bombs in their possession," Rice said. "It is only by the grace of God and the blood of the Capitol Police that the death toll was not much, much higher."
Rice continued by noting that in the week since the attack, "the President has not addressed the nation to ask for calm. He has not visited the injured and grieving. He has not offered condolences."

Apparently many Republicans are scared to speak out or vote for impeachment in case they or their families get the Pence treatment.

Jan 6, 2:24 "Mike Pence didn't have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our Country and our Constitution, giving States a chance to certify a corrected set of facts, not the fraudulent or inaccurate ones which they were asked to previously certify. USA demands the truth!" Trump wrote at 2:24 p.m. ET as the mob of his supporters was breaching the building.

Jan 6, 6:33 The pro-Donald Trump mob that attacked the U.S. Capitol chanted ‘hang Mike Pence’ after weeks of Trump peddling disinformation about the vice president's role in the 2020 election certification. A gallows is erected outside the capital building. Trump never called to check in on him in the Capitol bunker.

Jan 11 Twitter blocks phrase "Hang Mike Pence" - more conservative censorship. Damn Libs.
