I agree with the heroism of the cat, and that the dog had to be put down.

BUT I think there was a history between the boy and the dog we have not been told about. Kids can torture dogs without knowing they are doing it (pulling tails, hair, ears etc). Dogs do not attack at random unless they perceive a threat.

Mostly bad dogs are really cases of bad owners who do not train their dog properly, or do not supervise his/ her interactions with the neighbourhood (other dogs, children, animals, adults, vehicles). Dogs need almost as much attention as kids do.

Anonymous, dogs *do* attack at random at times. You already point out some reasons why dogs may go bad. In this case the dog also attacked people at the shelter, so there is little reason to assume the dog and the boy must have had a history. Also note the predatory way the dog attacked. It literally stalked the boy, treating him as prey.
