Scientific American Endorses Biden

They elaborate here. First paragraph:
The evidence and the science show that Donald Trump has badly damaged the U.S. and its people—because he rejects evidence and science. The most devastating example is his dishonest and inept response to the COVID-19 pandemic, which cost more than 190,000 Americans their lives by the middle of September. He has also attacked environmental protections, medical care, and the researchers and public science agencies that help this country prepare for its greatest challenges. That is why we urge you to vote for Joe Biden, who is offering fact-based plans to protect our health, our economy and the environment. These and other proposals he has put forth can set the country back on course for a safer, more prosperous and more equitable future.

Trump says USA will develop "herd mentality" around COVID. I think he's probably right for once. https://youtu.be/LFcNmFw9naI?t=217

David - if you're sufficiently anti-Trump, you might think this is good news. You might think that biased, anti-Trump coverage in the New York Times is good news.

I think these are bad news. Unbiased institutions are valuable to the country. Losing them is a loss to all of us.

Cheers

What makes you think they are biased? I suppose they have a science bias, but that was always the case.

"The evidence and the science show that Donald Trump has badly damaged the U.S. and its people—because he rejects evidence and science."

"Trump repeatedly lied to the public about the deadly threat of the disease, saying it was not a serious concern and “this is like a flu” when he knew it was more lethal and highly transmissible, according to his taped statements to journalist Bob Woodward. His lies encouraged people to engage in risky behavior, spreading the virus further, and have driven wedges between Americans who take the threat seriously and those who believe Trump's falsehoods. The White House even produced a memo attacking the expertise of the nation's leading infectious disease physician, Anthony Fauci, in a despicable attempt to sow further distrust."

The editor in chief of Science Magazine has also weighed in:

"As he was playing down the virus to the public, Trump was not confused or inadequately briefed: He flat-out lied, repeatedly, about science to the American people. These lies demoralized the scientific community and cost countless lives in the United States."

I hope not.

Herd immunity kicks in when 1-1/Ro of the population is infected.

That is 330 million*1-1/3=220 million .

Of those perhaps one in ten will get permanent organ damage, 22 million, and 1% will die, 2.2 million.

2.2 M deaths would be about 0.67% of the US population.

The 1918 pandemic killed 675,000 Americans, about 0.63% of the 1920 US population.

About 1.35 M Americans have died in all US wars and conflicts.
